artist profile In her native Brazil, in London and San Francisco, contemporary Irish-Brazilian artist Patricia Gurgel-Segrillo (gur – gel / se – gri – lo) has trained and worked in a diverse range of disciplines, through oil painting, silk-screen printing, film animation, hat design, gemology, ergonomics, interior accessories and jewellery design and manufacture. Patricia has developed the weaving techniques in silver and gold that she uses to create unique jewellery pieces throughout 25 years of jewellery-making. P Gurgel-Segrillo's contemporary jewellery series have been exhibited in galleries in the UK, Ireland, Japan, Brazil and the USA and are sold worldwide. Parallel to the jewellery-making, Patricia has produced two 'green design' work series of contemporary objects and sculptural lighting pieces designed and made in collaboration with wood artist Garvan McGrane and inspired by the elements water and air. In 2004 Patricia completed a MA Degree in Design Studies from Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, in London, where she lived for 8 years and established her design-craft-art practice. Recently Patricia set up a workshop/studio in Cork City, Ireland, where she has been dedicating time to figurative drawings and fine art prints, and is currently working on four series inspired by The Human Rights, womanhood and cross-cultural identity. bespoke 'green design' interior objects Designed and made in collaboration with wood artist Garvan McGrane. Their common interest lies in re-assessing materials, with a true open mind. Reclaimed and re-used materials are the focus of the objects series- their inherent qualities are brought out in every design. Compact fluorescent lamps (which use up to a quarter of the electricity of incandescent bulbs therefore they have a key role in the efforts to fight climate change) are used in ALL lighting pieces.
